Inside Al Khamsa

Alois Musil
AloisMusil
Peter Harrigan's complete article on Arabian explorer Alois Musil;

Alois Musil, a remarkable Austrian-Czech, was an explorer, professor, author, prelate, general and honorary tribal shaykh whose 72-year life ended in 1944. Though Musil was broadly, even spectacularly, accomplished, he remains among the least known of the 19th and early 20th centuries’ explorer-scholars of Arabia and the Levant—though that may be about to change.

Arabian Names Book“The Princess” Artemisia
CF (MV Reflection x Artema).

I thought everyone would like to know that the Davenport mare Artemisia CF [MV Reflection x Artema) made the list for the Top 20 Limited Distance Endurance Mileage Horses of all time! Artemisia CF is 17 years old this year, and celebrating her 12th consecutive year in distance riding. Two weeks ago, she completed 70 miles at the El Paso-Las Cruces Endurance Ride in fine form and loved every minute of it. (She actually has more miles than the list shows. We rode after this list was tabulated.)

Some Reflections on Continuity of the Desert Horse
San Luis Marc Anthony
By Joe Ferriss
Throughout the decade of the 1970s, Sharon and I traveled to many farms that represented a wide range of Al Khamsa bloodlines, taking movies and notes. We often saw similar horses that transcended breeding groups. However, the popular thought at the time was that Egyptians must be different than Davenports which must be different than Blue Stars which must be different than Combined Source breeding and so on. Most breeders stayed within their chosen breeding groups, but a few Combined Source breeders gave themselves more choices. There is certainly nothing wrong with preserving a specific breeding group or having very specific breeding choices and it has certainly produced some very honored and memorable horses. However, if one goes back far enough to the Al Khamsa foundations, it is not based on any one nationality or any one breeder but rather derives from the various migratory Bedouin tribes. ..
