Bint Asiirah (Richteous x PVA Asiirah) was chosen to represent the Egyptian Horse, for the 1st Annual Arizona Horse Festival as the only Al Khamsa Arabian. She was a hit! I showed her in a hand-made Bedouin saddle, bridle and breastplate. Hana, who I met the first day of the show, offered to let me borrow this spectacular ensemble for the show. Her father is from Arabia and brought it back to America for their Arabian horses.

A past Grand Champion Halter Mare, Treff-Haven Leina (Nagsous x Leilaah) was winner of the 2007 Asil High Point Sport Horse in Hand award offered at the Arkansas Victory Challenge show, with a score of 80.7. It was our first venture into the Sport Horse division and we discovered several areas to work on yet for future participations—also learned it could help a lot to have a good runner on the lead to show off what these horses are made of!

Also at the Victory Challenge show, Treff-Haven Salina (Nagsous x Alidance) was entered in the Halter Mares at the last minute, not fully prepared and with no professional training. She was taken into the ring by her maiden handler (as in, never had shown before). She went on to Reserve Grand Champion Mare and was also named the Most Classic Head Champion. This exceptional young mare gathered a lot of attention from judge and spectators alike.

Treff-Haven Sabeel (Treff-Haven Emir x Bint Lebleba), a 2002 Al Khamsa, Straight Egyptian stallion with no Nazeer or Babson in his pedigree, was shown in Sport Horse Stallions in Hand at the Arkansas Victory Challenge show, doing quite well, while revealing several areas his performance could be improved, and being his first time in the show ring. Sabeel was started under saddle this year, also. He is a tall (15.3hh), great moving young stallion with a lot of reach and power.

And we introduce the 2007 Al Khamsa, Straight Egyptian colt, Treff-Haven Layth (Treff-Haven Azrak x Bint Lebleba), now a weanling. He is the first foal of his sire and a replacement in rare lines containing no Nazeer and no Babson, thereby continuing some of the diversity in the genetic pool in addition to many exciting individual traits. His dam, Bint Lebleba, is the only Straight Egyptian daughter of *GAF Mosaad—imported from Egypt.

With sadness, we share, too, the loss of Treff-Haven Emir (*GAF Hosam x Naheed) this year, a 1997 Al Khamsa, Straight Egyptian, non-Nazeer stallion. Also his dam at 27 years of age: Naheed (*Zaghloul x Nagliah), bred by Gleannloch Farms.

Email dated 11/19/07: I attended the memorial service for Ed Skinner yesterday, and I have never seen a finer tribute to anyone. Of course, Ed deserved it, as he had friends from all over the country, and very many people were there whom he had introduced to Davenport Arabians. I met him back in the early 80’s, when there was a big interest in Al Khamsa, and we had AK meetings quite regularly. Ed was always at the center of things, and always gave a wonderful inspirational talk about the Bedouin horse. He had wonderful tales to tell, both of his own exploits, and the exploits of Raswan, and others. I still regret that we were unable to get him to tell his tales on tape, so future generations could hear him. But, he hated to be the center of attention; it is just that he always was, because of who he was. We will miss him, farewell my friend, we will meet in the future someday.

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Snowlion RSI, (1979–2007). He was the last living son of Richard Pritzlaff’s 1958 import, *Bint Nefisa, who gave her life bringing him into the world. Norton and Millie Grow bottle-fed and raised him, and even in old age, when Millie would visit Dynasty Egyptians in Washington, he would come running and whinnying as soon as he heard her voice. He only had one Heirloom foal, the stallion DE Nahed, bred by Norton and Millie, whom I obtained along with Snowlion earlier this year in hopes of getting some more Snowlion foals from him. Late this year, I bred him to my best mare, GEA Monietas Princess, and a great producing mare, Roshanara. Princess was checked “in-foal” and I’m waiting to check Roshanara.

[Editor: This is Ru Reggey’s story, a 1986 grey Egyptian + *Turfa, Al Khamsa Arabian Stallion (Ru Egyptian Day x Ru Bint Raagema by Ru Egyptian Night) – no Al Khamsa progeny. The following email from Carolyn Jacobson on AKHorsemen dated November 17, 2007, is a wonderful example of the cooperation and generosity amongst Al Khamsa Arabian horse owners:]

Ru Reggey arrived today at his new home with Sherri Jackson Dixon (Nellie Jackson’s niece) in Nevada... quite a journey from its beginning a month ago in Georgia!

I want to personally thank everyone involved in this endeavor:

Reggey’s former owner Terri Levien, for recognizing what a treasure she had in Reggey and seeing the need for him to reproduce himself within his bloodlines.

Jon Michael.. the key in arranging Reggey’s transport from Kentucky to Nebraska! And keeping Reggey at Hidden Hollow Preserve for over a week. Jon, you are the best!

Pamela Klein.. for hauling Reggey from Kentucky to the Cravers’ in Illinois. Awesome!

And to Charles & Jeanne for stabling Reggey until... Marie Arthur could pick him up and take him home to Nebraska with her AND kindly keeping him there until...

Sherri could meet her in Wyoming today and take him home!

Whew, everyone! I feel as though I have traveled every mile with this dear old stallion!

I believe it was Dawn Godwin Carver who made me aware that Reggey was literally in my own backyard. Thanks Dawn!

From the bottom of my heart I thank everyone involved in Reggey’s journey. May he sire many, many Al Khamsa foals for you Sherri!

January 25, 2008: “All of the people who helped get this wonderful older gentleman to his new home were absolutely the best of the best! Sherri is thrilled with him & will breed him to three of her Al Khamsa mares this spring for his first replacement foals...at age 22!”

Email, Nov. 12: Portico played statesman again on Saturday, giving rides to many kids as well as a few of the students on our campus. He was quite calm about the whole thing, given the screaming kids darting around his legs, over-amplified DJ, and moon-bounce game. He did decide that decorative marsh grass is not very tasty, but he’s still pretty proud of himself even this morning.

Mystic UF [1987 bay Davenport stallion by Janan Abinoam out of Astranah] and I entered, and were accepted into the Versatile Horse & Rider Competition in Springfield, MA at the Equine Affaire, weekend of Nov 7–11. We will also be riding in the Pfizer Fantasia Flag Ceremony.

On November 12: Hello all, I am reporting on our performance at the Pfizer Fantasia and our entry into the Versatile Horse and Rider Competition at the Massachusetts Equine Affair.

First, the Fantasia was fantastic to perform in; it was something I could do again and again! Mystic and I both love the applause, and we had so much fun dressing up and doing a flag drill, shooting our 6 shooters on the way out of the coliseum. I hope they want us back next year!

While I thought Mystic and I did well in the Versatile Horse and Rider, we did miss one of the 18 obstacles—the side pass/leg yield over poles (which we usually fly through), probably because we were a little flustered after the huge glittering streamer tunnel, and I was giving mixed signals. We completed the course in about 6.4 minutes if I remember it right, and the hula hoop did not land over the cone, but knocked it over, and only one person actually threw the hoop over the cone (there were 32 riders), many were complete misses. We were in the top 10 in speed, and many people missed obstacles and still went on to the top 10, so I am not sure why we did not—I am usually a very smooth calm rider, and Mystic is calm and quick to respond. The judging was supposed to be on horsemanship and 10 points per obstacle, I do not know my final score, but the riders that went on were from 137 to 149 I think. So while it was fun, I am disappointed in the scoring. The riders who went on were Reining Horses and Reiner types, and I think (I hope), one English rider who was fast and smooth. But the ten I thought would go on were not what was picked. Now that I know what to set up, it was a glorified trail class actually. I think it would be fun to do with friends, but for the $350 it cost to enter this one, I won’t be doing this again I think! I have some video. I will watch and see, maybe I did not do as well as I thought, but so many people came over and said I did great. SO sorry I couldn’t at least tell you all we went top ten! I describe the course below.

You had a maximum time of 90 seconds to complete each task, each item was worth 10 points, and time was maximum of 10 points extra, decreasing to 1 point for slowest riders.

1: stand in 4 cones and saddle your horse, 2: pick up left lead, then simple change to right lead, 3: keyhole, then run back to start (200 feet), 4: pole bend 6 poles, 21 feet apart, 5: turn on the haunches or reining spin 360 degrees, 6: jump four roll-top jumps, 7a: pick up egg and spoon off barrel, 7b: drop both in bucket on barrel, 8: back thru three directions, back-left turn back, right turn, back, 9: go over tarp with pole jumble over it, 10: cross bridge, 11: pick up hula hoop from jump standard, stand at cone A and throw to cone B, 12: go thru huge glittering “streamer-with-smoke” tunnel, 13: sidepass over poles to right with right turn, sidepass back to left with turn, 14: open and close gate behind you, 15: move ball with broom to box, 16: exit opening and closing gate behind you, 17: load onto trailer, 18: run to finish.

So, we could have done the gates better, and the bridge was narrow and we had to redo it since his rear foot came off. But we did the rest well, excepting the sidepass miss. It was a fun course, I wish I could have done it again for the finals! But then again we were exhausted from being there for five days, and looking forward to going home!

Bint Sierra SS (July 1981–January 2008) AHR 242793 (Parnell x Sierra Summersong). This morning (1/8) we had to make that choice you wish to avoid. We had to euthanize what I will characterize as one of my “foundation” mares: Bint Sierra SS, a dear little dark chestnut mare of 25% Babson and 75% Doyle breeding. She was coming 27 and likely had a stroke although we may never really know. We came home to discover that she could no longer get up despite her unending heart to persist. Her pal for years, Bint Bint Subani (Ibn Saafaddan x Bint Subani), herself coming 25, stood by her ceaselessly.

While I know in my heart that we set her free from her suffering of age, the tears for her loss remain. It is an end to a chapter here. She has one son remaining, Summer Sonnet SDA by Sierra Sandarac and as of this year, a granddaughter and grandson both by him!

Subanet Jabbar SDA (pending), Summer Sonnet SDA x Bint Bint Subani. Striking, solid-bodied dark chestnut stud colt with chrome, in June. First of this mating, bringing together the 3 main foundation horse bloodlines of Babson/Doyle lines here at SDA. 54.69% old Blunt and 45.31% Babson.

Bakura's Surpise Package

Big Surprises Come In Small Packages!

When Joe Berry had sent JA Bakura (Re-Echo x Raadin Jasara) to live out her days at a friend’s farm last year at the age of 23. An intensely Sirecho-bred mare, regrettably she had not produced a foal in nearly 10 years. Having no reason to think she might be, the folks who had her did not notice she was pregnant, which is hard to understand, but it does happen. Anyway, one morning they saw something small out in their field where Bakura was pastured along with their cattle and other horses. They went out to bring what they assumed was a calf into the barn. Imagine everyone’s surprise when they discovered it was a foal!

The old mare was not producing milk and the baby was getting dangerously cold in the ice and snow. After receiving a phone call that at first sounded like a strange practical joke, Joe and Linda came running. They quickly put Joe cradling the colt into the backseat of their car and headed for the vet’s office. Fortunately, they were able to revive him and provided colostrum when he began to nurse. Afterwards, Joe and Linda took the colt home to stay warm in their laundry room until they could figure things out. Soon they brought his mother back home after fashioning a stall for them in the barn and getting her going on some meds to help with her milk. They are still supplementing with a bottle but Bakura has accepted and cares for the foal. According to Joe, “The little guy continues to thrive and just gets better all the time. Considering what a gift he is no matter what he would look like, his beauty is a wonderful plus on this very special baby.”

The sire is likely to be JT Sadik Sireff (KH Seral Sireff x Masada Sabiha). Joe had pastured the old mare with him briefly before moving her to her retirement home. There is a slight chance the colt might actually be KH Seral Sireff’s own son, assuming that after a number of years without offspring he had somehow become fertile again in his final months. The AHA has confirmed it will be able to determine through DNA the sire of this tippy-eared little colt.

Preliminary planning is already underway and we are now looking for volunteers, particularly from the four-state “host” region (Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma), to help with all the activities. The focus for the upcoming convention will be to educate the public about the Al Khamsa Arabian horse. We encourage all Al Khamsa supporters to start making plans now to attend this exciting 2-in-1 event. Watch for further details in the Khamsat Express and Inside Al Khamsa. Please contact the 2008 Al Khamsa Convention Chair, Ellen May at arabians@centurytel.net, if you want to offer your ideas, resources or assistance.

SunnyRu Marine (Princeton Faaris x Princeton Maarena by Serr Maariner) Al Khamsa/Straight Egyptian/Sheykh Obeyd, Babson/Sirecho Stallion is settled in on my farm in Bells, TX and will be available to outside mares. This is a great and limited opportunity for Babson/Sirecho breeders. He is available live cover or AI on farm, and we are planning to ship semen if there is adequate interest. I am also looking for Sheykh Obeyd, Babson or Babson/Sirecho mares for breeding leases for him.

I have a mare that I would really like to sell or trade before spring. She is Al Khamsa/Blue List-eligible primarily Egyptian, a daughter of Masada Falim (Fabo x Balima) and granddaughter of Ansata Ibn Shah by Ansata Shah Zaman. I am willing to sell her reasonably or trade her for a Sheykh Obeyd mare or filly. If you are interested she can sell with a breeding, or in foal to Sunnyru Marine (Princeton Faaris x Princeton Maarena), see above. I am willing to work with anyone who might be interested in her. Thanks.

Bill and I are delighted to announce that Wilde Ivey Amir will be standing here for a while starting in spring 2008. He will be one of the few Kurush stallions on the east coast available for breeding and is a double Sportin Life grandson. We have room to take outside mares for breeding. If you are interested, contact Jannelle Wilde about his fee and me about mare care and other arrangements.

There will be room to take a few horses west in the spring, leaving from Appomattox, VA. We are looking at April for this trip and can make some minor course deviations as long as we end up in Illinois. Jannelle will have room to take them on to the west coast and points in between. Keep this trip in mind and try to work your shipping plans around it. We will have room for four horses heading west as far as the Mississippi River. If your horses need to go farther, contact Jannelle directly to see how much room she will have.

For sale: Grandaughter of *Tuhotmos and *Bint Binte El Bataa, sired by Masada El Bahim, in training for cross country riding, super disposition, very pretty and tall. She is Straight Egyptian, Sheykh Obeyd, and can be bred to one of our Straight Babson stallions. Nejd Arabians is also proud to announce the birth of the beautiful filly out of Nejds Sabbah by Medinna Maximus; she is really something special. Her sister out of Ru Rabohath died shortly after birth. This year will also be remembered as the year of the tragic death of Nejd’s Adham Ibn Ibn Faaris, a beautiful stallion who left no progeny. Now, his full brother Ahmar is the only Straight Babson son of Princeton Faaris with no Ibn Fa Serr blood. I am looking for another Babson mare to breed to him and to the only Babson son of FaSaad, Nejds Ibn Fa Saad.

The Ontario Competitive Trail Riding Association (“OCTRA”, http://www.octra.on.ca/) held its 2006 annual Awards Banquet on November 17, 2007. The High Point Horse for the year was HAF Allieena+ (Royal Jalliel x Imperial Nasreena), a Straight Egyptian mare owned by Bob Coleman and Michelle Bignell of Cayuse Creek Ranch. “Leena”, ridden principally by Michelle, completed 671 miles for the year in Endurance, Competitive Trail and Ride & Tie. This set a new distance record for OCTRA. “Leena” also won Top Arabian and Top Egyptian Arabian awards.

Cayuse Creek’s new mare, EAI Shahtahna (Qahtahn x EAI Sharimma) finished 8th Overall in OCTRA for 2007. She also won the Ontario 50 mile CTR Championship and placed top 10 in several Endurance races.

Cayuse Creek Ranch competes exclusively with Al Khamsa Arabians in distance riding.
