The News from Al Khamsa, Inc.
June 17, 2011

To: Al Khamsa, Inc.'s Supporters
From: Jeanne Craver, Publications Chair
Subject: Khamsat Time!

First, let me apologize for two... no, three things! Yesterday's email ended with "See you in Lexington." Obviously, that should have been "See you in Pennsylvania!" The email itself was requesting nominations for our annual awards, and we did get a response first thing this morning, sent to the Board email, rather than to Janet Maurer, Awards Chairman. Unfortunately, that email was deleted accidentally. If this was your email, please send it again, preferably to Janet herself. Thank you.

And I would like to apologize for the Khamsat being behind schedule. We will be trying harder over the next six months!

The Sphinx at Giza

A Khamsat issue is nearing completion, and it is time to request both ads in support of our mission, and subscriptions to the magazine. This issue contains the report of a trip to Egypt by Caryn Rogosky and Marilyn Lang, reprinted from the Sheykh Obeyd "Foundations" newsletter. It is a lead-in to more material from these two friends and fellow Arabian researchers.

MV Hashem Bey

The second part of Philip Bienvenu's article on Kamil Ibn Salan appears, with emphasis on that stallion's descendants. Photos of descendants are requested! (Above, MV Hashem Bey, a grandson of Kamil Ibn Salan.)

Charles Craver riding *La Tisa at Dr. Greene's farm in Virginia

The Preservation Task Force continues its articles on vanishing bloodlines with a feature on the horses imported to this country by Charles Crane: *Mohalhil, *La Tisa and *Mahsudha. The above, long-lost photo shows Charles Craver as a college student riding the aged Saudi mare, *La Tisa, at Dr. Greene's farm in Virginia. *La Tisa was in her mid-20s, and had had ten foals. Charles says she was a lovely mare.

Our quarterly photo feature on Al Khamsa athletes visits the less-traveled road of eventing. Not many horses, very few Arabians, and only a handful of Al Khamsa Arabians perform in this venue, and we will be featuring them. If you have an anecdote or a photo, please share it!

A new feature this issue is designed to take advantage of the wealth of information from the past that is being digitized and placed on the web. Articles and letters to the editor from periodicals of a century ago are providing photos and information that never made it into the Arabian horse literature. This represents a fun, fascinating and educational trip to the past!

With all of this going on, you won't want to be left out! Please subscribe today, if you are not already a subscriber. It is easy to do right on the Al Khamsa website at http://alkhamsa.org, or by contacting the Business Office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . And ads are easy, too. They can be paid for right on the website, or through the Business Office. Send ad materials to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Thank you for listening!

Subject: Time to Nominate!

Hi, Everyone,

Once again we are all looking forward to our Convention, this time in Pennsylvania. Every year Al Khamsa, Inc. acknowledges the efforts of those supporters who have gone above and beyond in their efforts to further the preservation of the desert bred Arabian. At this time I would like to ask that you help by sending in nominations for anyone you feel is deserving of such an honor. To help get you started, here is a list of established awards, and last year's recipients.

• Phyllis Ramsey Award

Jenny Krieg receives the 2010 Phyllis Ramsey Award from Janet Maurer Jennifer Krieg

An award for exception long-term dedication to the Al Khamsa Arabian horse, with loving appreciation and care for his own horses and their preservation for the future. Jennifer Krieg received the award in 2010 for her work in identifying and working to preserve rare blood lines as well as for her many years serving on the Al Khamsa Board of Directors.

• Al Khamsa Newcomer of the Year

Jim and Linda Uhrich proudly display their Newcomer Award at the 2010 convention Jim and Linda Uhrich

For a new Al Khamsa person who has contributed extraordinarily to the mission of Al Khamsa, Inc. In 2010 this was awarded to Linda and Jim Uhrich for their commitment to learn, their willingness to serve, and the energy and spirit they brought to those endeavors!

• Al Khamsa President’s Award

Presented at the Board’s pleasure to honor unique achievement by a supporter or group of supporters in advancing the role and mission of Al Khamsa. It is awarded only when the Board finds a case of exceptional merit. The 2010 recipient was Peter Harrigan in recognition of his support of the goals of Al Khamsa in his writings and appearances in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. Unfortunately, at the last moment Mr. Harrigan was unable to attend. We look forward to giving him applause for his award at the convention in 2011.

• Al Khamsa Publication Award

• Al Khamsa Volunteer of the Year

For extraordinary contribution to the mission of Al Khamsa, Inc. This award was not presented in 2010.

In order to have these awards ready for the Convention in September, please send your nominations in by July 15. You may email them to me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Hello, all!

The last Inside Al Khamsa was a terrific success. We had a wonderful response to our request for photos of Al Khamsa horses in dressage, and have eight pages of wonderful images saluting our horses.

Besides the articles mentioned in the last email, we have a photo article about the location of Lady Anne Blunt's Sheykh Obeyd stud in present-day Cairo, a reminder of the fascinating plans for the 2011 Al Khamsa convention in Pennsylvania and a feature on *Nejdme AHC #1.

Petroglyph, or Rock Art, in Saudi Arabia, photo by Richard Bryant

But most of all, we have a very special article by Dr. Sandra Olsen, one of the world's leading authorities on the earliest horse domestication. This article covers research trips done just this winter to Saudi Arabia in search of petroglyphs that expand current knowledge of the proto-Arabian horse and how it has developed into what we love and treasure today.

But we still need your help. What we need now is advertising supporting of the Khamsat. Please help us print this issue of the Khamsat! You can contact me directly, and payment is easy on line using the menu on the Khamsat page on the website.

Thanks to everyone for their assistance in keeping the Khamsat going!

Hello, everyone!

The weather this winter seems to have everyone out of rhythm. Too much cold, too much snow! We need to find our Al Khamsa ball caps and think warm, green thoughts!

Laurel Myers and EH Jalaal

Laurel Myers and her Al Khamsa gelding EH Jalaal.

This issue has the rest of the talks from the Children of the Wind conference held last spring in Sicily; a visit with the Myers family and their horses in the Big Sky country in Montana; more detailed entries from the Preservation Task Force on our most endangered lines; photos of Al Khamsa horses in dressage, bloodline features on the Al Khamsa stallions Black Lightning and Kamil Ibn Salan, and more exciting articles to be announced soon.

Dressage Riders: don't let the distance riders blow you away! We need photos of you and your horses in dressage. We had pages of distance riders in the summer issue, so let's live up to their standard and show the world your pride in your horses! This is a FREE service, so please be in touch.

Please consider supporting the the Khamsat with an advertisement. This is such a good place to be seen. You can contact me directly, and payment is easy on line using the menu on the Khamsat page on the website.

Thank you so much for your help!

Subject: Time to Get Back to the Khamsat!

Hello, everybody!

A necessary but unfortunate side-effect of getting the new Al Khamsa website up and running is that the Fall Khamsat has been delayed. This is because many of the same people work on both projects.

Rochon Painting

A closeup of part of the beautiful painting done by Cathy Rochon
as a backdrop for the Bedouin tent at the 2010 Convention.

Now that the website is perking along, the Khamsat is, too. This issue has coverage of the 2010 Al Khamsa Convention; several more talks, by Basil Jadaan and Deirdre Hyde, from the Children of the Wind conference held last spring in Sicily; a report from the 2010 Pyramid Society Breeders Conference in Atlanta by Joe Ferriss and Edouard al-Dahdah; the first in a series of Bedouin Tales by Mustafa al-Jabri, renowned breeder of asil horses in Aleppo, Syria; more detailed entries from the Preservation Task Force on our most endangered lines; an article on improving your riding from Sarah Sanders, and more. It is close to going to the printer, but we are short on advertising in order to make publication happen.

Please consider supporting the the Khamsat with an advertisement, and help us get back on schedule! You can contact me directly, and payment is easy on line using the menu on the Khamsat page on the website.

The beautiful new Al Khamsa website is up and running!

A growing number of people are taking advantage of the Supporter section and are posting their Owner/Breeder listings and photo-enhanced Classifieds. Both online services are free for Al Khamsa owners. In the process of developing the Classifieds, it became clear that many people are not sure how to approach marketing their Al Khamsa Arabians should they have horses for sale. The project was given to the Education Committee to collect advice on how to go about advertising an Al Khamsa Arabian, and the result is on the Classifieds page on the menu as "Selling Tips."

We hope this addition to the website is one you find helpful and that you will visit http://alkhamsa.org.

Subject: New Al Khamsa Website is Here!

Hi, All!

We are absolutely delighted to announce that the new Al Khamsa Website is open at the usual URL of http://alkhamsa.org.

Website Logo

This has been a project that has taken over a year from the decision made at the 2009 Annual Meeting in Oregon. A committee meeting was held in early October of 2009 in Springfield, Illinois, with Alice Martin as host, and the basics of what we wanted were decided upon. The committee set up brainstorming sessions to set up what we wanted for the different sections, and then we started the process of identifying a professional who was optimum for our needs. We found that person in Jillison Parks of Sans Sheriff LLC in Savannah, Georgia.

The process of converting our ideas and goals and vision into a real, live website has continued for some months now, and while the process will probably never end, we are happy to open the doors and hang out the Welcome sign!

Al Khamsa Classifieds

You will find some of the same sections as on the old site, but expanded with updated organization and navigation around the site. You will also find that there are new sections for you to add your input, your foal news, your brags, your photos. For example, classified ads now offer the addition of a photo. Farm listings offer photos and active links to your own website. Stallion listings offer photos plus an automatic link to the Al Khamsa Online Roster. No other website can offer this one-click service to pedigree, ancestral elements and generations of progeny. And these services are FREE for owners of Al Khamsa horses!

Al Khamsa Preservation

There is a major new section on Preservation that will be expanded greatly over the coming months. The Al Khamsa Store has been simplified and amplified to give you more choices and easier transactions. All sorts of new and shiny things, plus plans for more!
