Featured Speaker:
Peter Harrigan
Peter Harrigan has written on desert bred Arabians and has been a resident
in Saudi Arabia for some 25 years. He is the commissioning Editor of Barzan
Publishing's biography of Lady Anne Blunt by HVF Winstone and The
Arab Horse by Peter Upton. His writing has been featured in Saudi
Aramco World Magazine including the cover story for their Nov/Dec
2001 issue, "The Polish Quest for Arabian Horses." His latest feature on
Arabian Camel Pageants and Shows can be found in their recent May/June
2008 edition and online. Of particular interest is that Barzan Publishing's
founder is Dr. Mohammed Talal al-Rasheed, a direct descendant of the dynastic
family of Ibn Rasheed that ruled until 1923 from Hail, Saudi Arabia where
numerous equestrian travelers including the Blunts visited after making
their way across the Great Nafud desert.
Peter will share with us some of his extensive knowledge about the history
of the Bedouin Arabian horse, its travels out of the desert and in more
recent times, its reverse journey back to its homelands. He notes how
the Arabian horse is once again serving as an ambassador between nations.
He will also describe traditional methods of presenting Arabian horses
for viewing and will discuss which attributes are most prized in the breed's
place of origin.
Eye of the Beholder: The Art of Breeding Arabian Horses
Review what makes a good horse a good horse, an Arabian an Arabian and,
most importantly, how to identify and evaluate for yourself what matters
to you in selecting and perpetuating quality breeding stock. Better understand
how conformation translates into movement and what it is about certain
horses that does or doesn't appeal to you. The goal of this workshop is
to help you envision your Ideal Arabian for the purposes of bringing this
vision forward to best express your breeding program objectives. Our trio
of hosts for this interactive session will include Mike Albertini, Client
Services coordinator for Arabians LTD, in Waco, TX, Tom Patterson, former
head trainer for Ansata Arabians previously in Mena, AR and Sue Burnham
of Hope Farm, in Cove, AR.
