The first definitive volume on Al Khamsa Arabians with organizational and ancestral introduction by Carol Lyons and Jackson Hensley. Includes a directory of owners/breeders in the US and Canada as well as a pedigree index and sponsor/supporter section.

Al Khamsa, Inc.: Al Khamsa Arabians; privately pub-lished, 1983. An expanded volume based on the first 1976 Directory, this large hardbound book gives detailed background, including tribal information, a glossary, an anthology of Arabian horse literature and extensive appendices, explaining Ancestral Elements, a detailed table of all Al Khamsa Foundation horses, pedigree notes and bibliography. There is a directory section of breeders/owners in North America as well as a foreign section and full pedigree index. Also contains an sponsor/supporter section.

Al Khamsa, Inc.: Al Khamsa Arabians II; privately published, 1993. A much expanded volume based on the Al Khamsa Arabians (1983), this book also gives detailed background, including tribal information, a glossary, a historical timeline and an anthology of Arabian horse literature. Greatly expanded and illustrated are sections on Ancestral Elements, cataloging of all Al Khamsa Foundation horses divided into historical context of pre- and post-registration (including a European section), pedigree notes and bibliography. Given the scope of the academic background information there is no directory format in this volume but a full pedigree index, noting tail male and tail female information, followed by a progeny section. The result is comparable to being a herd book of all Al Khamsa Arabians extant at the time of publication. Also contains an sponsor/supporter section.

Al Khamsa, Inc.: Al Khamsa Arabians II, 1998 Update; privately published, 1998. Hardbound. An updated companion volume to Al Khamsa Arabians II, providing an extension of Al Khamsa Arabians not born or covered in the previous volume of extant horses. Includes information on added foundation horses, additional pedigree notes and errata to volume II. Like its parent volume, it contains an extensive pedigree index, progeny section and sponsor/supporter section.

An anthology of features from the 1935-38 issues of the annual publication of the Arab Horse Society in England. Of interest to Al Khamsa enthusiasts for its accounts by various writers of Arabians in Europe and the Middle East.

Archer, Rosemary; Pearson, Colin and Covey, Cecil: The Crabbet Arabian Stud. Its History and Influence; Alexander Heriot & Co., Ltd., Gloucestershire, England, 1978. Numerous photographs. The story of historic Crabbet Stud, England, and its founders, Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt, their daughter, Lady Wentworth, and of the Blunt's Sheykh Obeyd Stud in Egypt. Compiled in part from family papers, this book contains much material on Blunt foundation stock, as well as information on the influence of these horses in other countries.

Asil Club: Asil Araber (Vol. I, 1977; Vol. II, 1980; Vol. III, 1985; Vol. IV, 1993; Vol. V, 2000; Vol. VI, 2007); Olms Presse, Hildesheim, Germany and New York. The Asil Club is the European equivalent of Al Khamsa, Inc., with members in many countries around the world. The two major sections in each volume contain an anthology of basic statements from the literature on the breeding of Arabian horses. Profusely illustrated with 19th century art and a collection of pictures and corresponding pedigrees of individual horses of the members. Most quotations are translations from non-English literature and are informative to the American reader.

Blunt, Lady Anne: Bedouin Tribes of the Euphrates; Harper & Brothers, New York, 1879. An account of Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt's first trip (1877–8) to the Arabian desert, the purchase of horses later sent to Crabbet, and several chapters on Bedouin customs, horse breeding and strains of the horses. llustrated with old engravings.

A presentation of many of Lady Anne Blunt's private writings. This book gives insight into the perspective of the Blunts' on the Arab horse both in his native land and in Europe.

Borden, Spencer: The Arab Horse; Doubleday, Page & Co., New York, 1906. Borden's stated purpose in this book was to encourage the maintenance of the purity of the original breed through knowledge of the Arab's history, characteristics, qualities, and strains.

Boucaut, Sir James Penn: The Arab, the Horse of the Future; Gay & Bird, London, 1905. Former prime Minister of South Australia, Boucaut builds the case for identifying the gradual deterioration of the Thoroughbred and the Australian horse. He cites the excellence of the Arabian horse and makes the case for the Arabian horse as the solution to halting deterioration and hails it as the horse of the future. Includes some interesting early photographs of Blunt-bred stock in Australia.

Brown, William Robinson: The Horse of the Desert; originally published by Derrydale Press, 1929; new edition The MacMillan Co., New York, 1947; re‑issued by The Jay Shuler Co., Inc., Springville, New York, 1967. The book contains a complete background on the Arabian horse. It covers the habitat that fixed the Arabian type, its origin, history, qualities, and usefulness for cavalry. Brown has included an extensive list of the strains and families of Arabian horses, along with his opinion that "the indiscriminate mixture of strains by breeders... has led to an inevitable loss of type much more quickly than the uninformed would suppose."

Conn, George H.: The Arabian Horse in America; A.S. Barnes & Co., New York, 1972. Dr. Conn presents thoroughly researched information on the Arabian horse and its influence on the light breeds. The book contains complete lists of all horses of Arabian breeding, purebred and partbred, imported to this country between 1730 and 1948. It describes the evolution of the Arabian Horse Registry.

Conn, George H.: The Arabian Horse in Fact, Fantasy, and Fiction: A.S. Barnes & Co., New York, 1959. A compilation of lore, legend and factual information to aid the reader in getting a more accurate picture of the Arabian horse largely by dispelling some of the misconceptions. Through excerpts of a great diversity of early writers, Mr. Conn provides an informative panorama of human sentiment on the Arabian horse.

Davenport Arabian Horse Conservancy: Davenport Arabian Horses, A Collection of Articles; Jeanne Craver, Ed., Seauphah Publishing Assoc., Inc., Winchester, Illinois, 2004.

Davenport, Homer: My Quest of the Arabian Horse; B.W. Dodge & Co., New York, 1909; annotated ed. The Annotated Quest; Seauphah Publishing Assoc. Inc., Hillview, Illinois, 1992. The 1909 edition gives an entertaining and factual account of the purchase of Arabian horses from the Bedouins of Arabia. Contains descriptive material on the foundation animals of the Davenport Ancestral Element. Photographs and Davenport's drawings add to the enrichment of the book. The 1992 annotated version gives a thorough, bigger picture view of the Davenport importation to America through many informative and factual annotations and side bars as well as cataloging the 20th century status of Davenport Arabian horses. Many interesting photographs.

Dickinson, Gen. J.M.: Catalog of Travelers Rest Arabian Horses; privately published catalogs of various dates and reprints, Nashville, Tennessee and Santa Barbara, California. Illustrated with photographs and ancestral information on Arabians of the Travelers Rest Stud. Including some, imported horse information as well as show, performance, and racing information.

Dickson, Col. H.R.P.: TThe Arab of the Desert; George Allen & Unwin Ltd., London, 1949. Mr. Dickson was British Political Agent to Kuwait for many years and a scholar regarding that part of the world. This interesting book gives a close insight into Bedouin life in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. It has only one chapter on the Arabian horse, but that chapter is informative.

Fippen, John W.: Heirloom Egyptian Arabian Horses 1840–2000, privately published by the John W. Fippen Family, St. Joseph, Illinois, 2004. Beginning with identifying the Heirloom breeding group of Al Khamsa horses and a thorough background of its formation, this book catalogs and analyzes through numerous ancestral charts and listings, the complete Heirloom breeding group from 1840–2000. Includes extensive pedigree notes including witness accounts on many of these horses. Also included are charts of analysis and informative articles of the status of Heirloom Arabians in breeding and performance. Profusely illustrated with many photographs.

Fleming, James (ed.): The Courthouse Arabian Stud [of H.V. Musgrave-Clark]; Alexander Heriot & Co., Ltd, Cheltenham, Glos., England, 1992.

Forbis, Judith: Authentic Arabian Bloodstock; Ansata Publications, Mena, Arkansas, 1990. An extensive anthology of 30 years of the Forbises' writings, life experience and knowledge gained concerning Arabian horses while traveling and living in the Middle East. Includes chapters on Prince Mohamed Aly, Dr. Branch, the Inshass Stud, strains, extensive racing statistics and much more. Includes many, many photos of horses from turn of the century to present, making this one of the most pictorial records of the ancestors of Egyptian Arabians.

Forbis, Judith: Authentic Arabian Bloodstock II, The Story of Ansata and Sharing the Dream; Ansata Publications, Mena, Arkansas, 2003. This second volume focuses on the philosophy and art of breeding Arabian horses and provides a detailed history of the Ansata Arabian Stud breeding program. It includes a herd book section giving detailed account of nearly every Ansata horse bred from the 1959 importation to 2002 presented by strain, and giving history of each strain. There is an illustrated chapter giving original descriptions and photos from the Von Szandtner personal herd book at the EAO, supplemented by other descriptions and pictures of many ancestors of Egyptian Arabians. A retrospective on the influence of stallions of Ansata breeding is followed by a pictorial chapter of other breeders worldwide who have utilized this breeding program.

Forbis, Judith: The Classic Arabian Horse; Liveright, New York, 1976. Mrs. Forbis traces Arabian horse history from 1580BC to the present. Photographs of ancient and modern art depict horses of past and present, the conditions under which they were kept, how they were trained and how the strains were developed. Emphasis is on the Egyptian Arabian horse.

Forbis, Judith: Hoofbeats Along the Tigris; J.A. Allen & Co., Ltd., London, 1970. An adventurous and informative account of the early years of Judith Forbis in the Middle East. Includes accounts of her challenging racing experiences as a woman jockey in the Middle East as well as considerable information on racing and breeding Arabians and Eastern horses in Turkey and neighboring regions.

Forbis, Judith and Sherif, Gulsun: The Abbas Pasha Manuscript, Ansata Publications, Mena, Arkansas, 1993. A classical and artistic book in the style of an old manuscript. Divided into four parts including 19th century Arabian horse history in Europe and the Middle East. Part 3 contains the Abbas Pasha Manuscript, an English translation of the Bedouin testimonies of the ancestry of the Arabian horses in the collection of 19th century Egyptian Viceroy Abbas Pasha.

Forbis, Judith and Schimanski, Walter: The Royal Arabians of Egypt and the Stud of Henry B. Babson; Thoth Publishers, Waco, Texas, 1976. A history of the stud founded by Mr. Babson in 1932 from Egyptian stock, with extensive research of the entire bloodline deriving from this importation, including the sources in Egypt. Numerous photos including many never before published. Babson Egyptian stock is cataloged, including progeny, from the 1932 importation to 1970.

A record of the Arabian horse from biblical times to the present day with emphasis on England, especially the Crabbet Stud and its influence throughout the world. The historical material—photographs and excerpts from Blunt papers—is of special importance.

Guarmani, Carlo: The Purebred Arabian Horse; first published as El Kamsa, Bologna, Italy, 1864 (translated from original French mss. by Dr. A. Reflecting knowledge gained over a 16-year journey through Egypt, Palestine, Syria and northern Arabia, Guarmani gives an informative background on the Arabian horse including Bedouin customs, lore, and superstitions.

Guttmann, Ursula: The Lineage of the Polish Arabian Horse; Ernst Holder, Marbach/Lauter Germany, 1968. Translation by Erika Schiele, discussion by Dr. F.B. Klynstra. For those interested in exploring the background of early European breeding, this is an excellent reference. Many large pedigree forms make this a costly book.

Harris, Albert W: The Blood of the Arab; Arabian Horse Club of America, Chicago, 1941. A standard work on the origins of Arabian breeding in America by one of the breeders who was there at the beginning.

Heck-Melnyk, Hansi: The Straight Egyptian Index, Vols. 1-6; privately published, Hawthorne, Florida, 1991. Created as a signed and numbered limited edition, this index of "Straight Egyptian" Arabians, as the author has defined it, provides a comprehensive pedigree cataloging of horses from the "desert beginning" to 1994. It is a very thorough index providing ancestral information including: name, alternate names, complete foaling date/year of birth when known, parentage, country of origin stud book entry numbers, strain, breeder, owner, importer in some instances, as well as "Blue Catalog referenced" classification and parentage questions footnoted for some entries. The first volume, covering desert–1960, sometimes gives progeny as well but later volumes are devoted exclusively to providing progeny for earlier entries and supplemental information is added to each volume. One of the most comprehensive catalogings of horses connected to Egypt.

Heck-Melnyk, Hansi: The Abbas Pasha–Ali Pasha Sharif Collection, in 3 volumes, soft‑cover, privately published, Hawthorne, Florida, 1991. In the pattern established in the above mentioned Straight Egyptian Index, the author has cataloged horses of lineage from Abbas Pasha I and his successors and their contemporaries as introduced in the beginning of the first volume of this three-volume series. The next two volumes are progeny references for the first volume. Again, a very thorough document of horses connected to early Egypt.

This is an informative, thorough record of early Arabians imported to North America, providing detailed information about backgrounds and origins of imports as well as their progeny and multiple photos of each horse when available. Often people having first-hand knowledge of these imports are quoted and referenced. Also included are sire line charts, family charts, strain reference tabulation, information on original breeders including Bedouin tribes, and information on the importers. Volume I covers US registration numbers 2–82. Volume II covers numbers 111–326. Volume III covers numbers 343–518.

Murdoch, Martha/The Pyramid Society: Manual of Straight Egyptian Arabian Horses; The Pyramid Society, Lexington, Kentucky, 1997, with periodic supplements. An extensive pedigree index of Pyramid Society recognized horses from the mid-1800s to recent. This publication gives some background information on the horse in Egypt as well as the RAS and EAO. Entries include name, US registration number, color, sex, birth year, parentage and strain. Also included are North American horse export and import information, as well as gelding, color changes, Canadian only registrations and errata in the supplements. Cleanly presented, the index is quick and easy to use.

Ott, Jane Llewellyn: The Blue Arabian Horse Catalog; Pine Hill Farm, Newport, Vermont, 1961. Based on the author's research, this is an informative cataloging of those horses imported to the USA and their ancestors that trace entirely to the Bedouin tribes and are suitable for reproduction of Bedouin type. This was the first cataloging of its kind in America and a significant influence on preserving Bedouin-oriented bloodlines. Supplements to the Catalog were dated through 1969.

Includes foundation horse tables, extensive ancestral notes, horses untabulated or not listed in official records, and horses exported from Egypt. Many historic photos included.

Piduch, Dr. Erwin: Arabische Pferde von El Zahraa; privately published, Germany, 1981. Produced as a gift in tribute to Egypt's president Anwaar Sadat, this book gives introduction and background of primary horses and root stock bred from at the Egyptian government stud El Zahraa. Divided by strains, it is well illustrated with photos and numerous extended pedigrees as well as Egyptian descendants in Germany.

Piduch, Dr. Erwin: Egypt's Arab Horses; Kentauros‑Verlag, Lienen, Germany, 1988. A broad examination of the history and roots of Arabian breeding in Egypt. It includes many ancestral family charts of the various families of Arabians bred in Egypt. Well illustrated with art and many photos both color and black and white. Includes cultural quotes on the Arabian horse as well as a timeline chart from c2500BC–1981.

Raswan, Carl: The Arab and His Horse. privately published, 1955. The best simple discussion of worldwide Arabian breeding in combination with a presentation of the essentials of Raswan's understanding of the principles according to which horses were bred in desert Arabia. Considerable discussion is given to the principles of strain breeding. New printing, available from Esperanza Raswan.

Romantic account of Raswan's life in desert Arabia, with stories of daily life in the Bedouin tribes and their usage of Arabian horses. Like Black Tents of Arabia, this contains romantic accounts of Raswan's life in desert Arabia, with stories of daily life in the Bedouin tribes and their usage of Arabian horses. Earliest editions of both of these books contain images and appendices not found in later editions. New printing, available from Esperanza Raswan.

Raswan, Carl: The Raswan Index; originally privately published in seven volumes; reprinted in three volumes by I‑Tex Publ. Co., Inc., Ames, Iowa, 1969; reprinted in its entirety in two volumes in larger page format by Esperanza Raswan, 1990. The Index is arranged like a dictionary of Arabian horses, with material gathered from thousands of notes, cards and photographs accumulated in over 30 years of travel. It can be used to trace the pedigrees of many Arabian horses beyond American stud books to Europe and the desert. This is not a simple source, but it is worthwhile to own and study it.

Upton, Peter: Desert Heritage; Skilton & Shaw, London, 1980. A beautifully illustrated book of Peter Upton's sketches and paintings of individual foundation horses of the Blunts' Crabbet and Sheykh Obeyd Studs. Each illustrated horse also receives interesting annotation, giving an informative and personal touch to understanding the foundation stock acquired by the Blunts.
